The Domaine de Labourdonnais, a privately owned Estate, was founded in 1774 and recently opened to the public.
This magnificent authentic Estate of 540 hectares is surrounded by spectacular green sugar cane fields and is ideally located in the north of the island.
Château de Labourdonnais, surrounded its beautiful orchards, was built between 1856 and 1859 by Christian Wiehe where himself and his descendant lived until recently.
This grand mansion was restored between 2006 & 2010 and converted into a museum that invites you to discover the nineteenth century Mauritian lifestyle as well as its history.
Fifty years ago, the Estate embarked in a diversification process starting by its agricultural activity to produce a variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and also has a nursery offering a large variety of fruit trees and decorative plants.
Today, the Estate has further diversified its activities offering products and services such as; fruit transformed products, leisure and events activities, real estate services, distillation of rum and much more.
Ideally situated off the N2 Motorway, 10 minutes drive to Grand Bay and 20 minutes away from Port Louis, the Estate offers office spaces for rent, ranging from 20m2 to 400m2 in a natural and authentic environment.
Facilities and services such as dental care, physiotherapist, a yoga centre, communication and advertising agencies, financial services, travel agent are available on the Estate.
Internationally renowned schools offer English & French curriculum from pre primary to secondary grades. Sport fields, a swimming pool as well as a tennis club (Tennis Nord) are also located on the Estate.
You can have access to our magnificent historical gardens and will find farm grown and locally made products in our grocery shop – La Corbeille. Our café/restaurant – La Terrasse offers to visitors a true experience of Mauritian cuisine.
The orchards date back from 1975 and now offer up to fifteen different varieties of tropical fruits such as:
- Papaya: Solo, Malaisie & Tainung
- Citrus: Local, Dancy & Clementines
- Mangoes: Rosat, Victoria, Agnes & Early gold… etc
An area of 45 hectares is dedicated to the orchards that produces up to 500 tons of fruit per year.
Fruits are sold at our grocery shop La Corbeille, to local buyers, supermarkets and our transformation factory (Les Vergers de Labourdonnais) which produces a variety of products such as; jams, juices and fruit candies/pastes.
The Vanilla plantation occupies an area of 5 hectares, under shade houses and was established in 2000.
Presently we produce approximately 450 kilos of dried pods annually.
The cultivation of vanilla is an intensive activity. Most of the operations require manual intervention such as the pollination of the flowers in the mornings during the flowering season.
You can find two varieties of vanilla on the Estate namely; Planifolia & Tahitensis.
